The Independence Blue Cross Foundation has awarded nearly $1.7 million in grants to support its Building Healthier Communities and Bolstering the Health Care Workforce programs. The grants are aimed at supporting nursing education and improving the health and wellness of more than 10,000 residents across southeastern Pennsylvania, including seniors, children and diverse underserved populations, the foundation said. A total of 21 nursing schools will receive grants, including first-time grantee Penn State Abington, as part of the Bolstering the Health Care Workforce program. They will fund scholarships for undergraduate, graduate and doctoral nursing students. Meanwhile, this cycle of Building Healthier Communities grant funding will go to 16 organizations, including the Bhutanese American Organization, the Cambodian Association of Greater Philadelphia, the Center for Grieving Children, the Fund for Philadelphia, the Good Samaritan Shelter and Meals on Wheels of Chester County.
